Engagement Session on Capitol Hill
Lauren and Michael may possibly be the quintessential black couple of Capitol Hill. As the story goes, Lauren & Michael met at a fundraiser gala that neither one of them wanted to attend (but we’re so glad they did)!
How They Met
Lauren: “When we met in April 2013, I was working at a government relations firm and Michael was working on Capitol Hill. A mutual friend invited several organizations to an annual dinner gala at the Capital Hilton honoring business and political leaders. Neither one of us wanted to attend this midweek event and would have rather headed straight home after work. Lucky for us we attended the event and life has never been the same!!”
Lauren: It took Michael 3 or 4 days to call. I was convinced he was not interested. I even mentioned to a friend that Michael was way past the Steve Harvey 24-hour rule LOL! My friend said “girl please, he probably just didn’t want to call you during the work week!” Ironically, Michael called during that brunch, but I missed his call! I called him back and we talked for hours, and set up our first date. Our first date was a hit and as they say the rest is history. Michael and I dated for two and one-half years. Since our first date at SEI, a fabulous sushi restaurant, where we talked until the restaurant closed, we have been attached at the hip.
How He Asked
Lauren: Just as our first date signaled the start of something special, our engagement in December 2015 marked the beginnings of a lifetime together. It was five days before Christmas. We were heading down to Michael’s family in Louisiana for Christmas, so Michael suggested we exchange “hard-to-ship” gifts. We exchanged gifts at my apartment by the Christmas tree. Michael loves surprises, and he brilliantly surprised me. The ring box was inside of a jewelry box that was placed inside of multiple other Christmas boxes that I had to open to get to “the gift.” The next thing I knew, Michael was down on one knee asking me to marry him. I was completely ecstatic. After calling our parents, we went out to a super romantic, candlelit dinner, where we were serenaded by a live piano player and had a special “first dance” together to “I Can’t Help Falling In Love.” It was an absolutely romantic night.
On Her Beau
Lauren: Michael is truly everything I’ve prayed for and more—and I beam every time he says the same. Throughout our courtship, we enjoyed taking numerous outings and festivals in the DC, Maryland, and Virginia (DMV) area, spending time at our favorite wineries, and enjoying gatherings with friends and family.
Michael & Lauren got married in Charleston, SC on June 18, 2016. They heard about their photographer, Sirena Singleton of Aneris Photography, through Lauren’s cousin, who recommended Sirena. Sirena is a member of the Queen Photographers and an area leader for Charleston. See more of Lauren and Michael’s engagement photos below:
